Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise Have a Girl!
From PEOPLE: Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have welcomed their first child together, two inside sources told PEOPLE.

The couple "joyously welcomed the arrival of a baby girl, Suri, today," the actor's rep said in a statement after PEOPLE first broke the news exclusively. "The child weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20 inches in length. Both mother and daughter are doing well."

The name Suri has its origins in Hebrew meaning "princess," or in Persian meaning "red rose," the rep added.

In late October, barely six months into their romance, an ecstatic Cruise and Holmes revealed that they were expectant parents.

Cruise, 43, and Holmes, 27, had made no secret of their desire to start a family together: When asked by PEOPLE last June if they were planning to have children, Holmes smiled and said simply, "Yes."

Friends of the Toledo, Ohio-bred Holmes called her perfectly suited to her upcoming role. "She almost seems born for motherhood," said Oliver Hudson, actress Kate Hudson's brother and an old pal who costarred with Holmes in Dawson's Creek. "She's a nurturer. She's got mother qualities a lot of girls her age don't have."

Cruise, meanwhile, is "a great dad already," according to his pal, actress Leah Remini. He has two children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman: Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11, whom Cruise and Kidman adopted as infants. Remini told PEOPLE that both kids are "so cool…You can sit and talk to them about life."

As for marriage, Cruise and Holmes plan to tie the knot soon, Cruise said on the German TV program Wetten, dass..? on April 1. "In summer we want to get married. I won't let this woman get away."

Immediately ahead for the new dad: the May 5 release of "Mission: Impossible 3. Holmes stars in the recently released satirical film about Washington politics, Thank You for Smoking.

Cruise, Holmes welcome 'Tomkitten'
From AP: The Tomkitten has arrived.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the high-profile pair dubbed TomKat by the media, had a baby girl Tuesday, said Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson.

The baby, named Suri, weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches long, he said.

"Both mother and daughter are doing well," Robinson said in a prepared statement.

The name Suri has its origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or in Persian, meaning "red rose," the statement said.

The baby was born in Los Angeles but the exact location was not disclosed.

It's the first child for Holmes, 27. Cruise, 43, has an adopted daughter and son from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Details surrounding the birth, which was planned under the tenets of the Church of Scientology as a silent procedure, weren't disclosed.

About a dozen reporters and photographers stood by outside the Beverly Hills home where Cruise and Holmes live. Security officers inside the compound videotaped the journalists.

A security guard at the gate -- which was shrouded in black to prevent anyone from seeing in -- refused to release any information. A few cars did arrive and were allowed into the estate. A police motorcycle officer stopped by around 4 p.m. and sat watching the goings-on.

The patrolman, who identified himself as Officer Chase, said he was just making a routine check, since activity around the area had been heightened for some time. He asked if the baby had been born, was told yes, and drove off.

It was just about a year ago that Cruise's romance with Holmes became a worldwide sensation.

Cruise hopped up and down on a couch during a television interview with Oprah Winfrey as he professed his love.

"I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," Cruise declared at the time. "Something happened, and I want to celebrate it."

The antics were widely mocked, but Cruise was unfazed and continued to avow his affection for Holmes.

He and Holmes, a star of TV's "Dawson's Creek," had been first photographed together in Rome in April 2005.

She had previously been engaged to actor Chris Klein; Cruise had been married to Mimi Rogers as well as Kidman, and had dated Penelope Cruz for several years.

In June, Cruise announced to a Paris press conference that he had proposed to Holmes atop the Eiffel Tower.

"Today is a magnificent day for me; I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he said.

No wedding date has been disclosed.

Katie Holmes gives birth to Tom Cruise's baby
From Reuters: Actress Katie Holmes, who became engaged last June to actor Tom Cruise, gave birth on Tuesday to the couple's first child, a girl they named Suri, their spokesman said.

Mother and child, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces (3.4 kg) at birth, were "doing well," Cruise's publicist, Paul Bloch, said in a statement.

The name Suri has it origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or in Persian, meaning "red rose," the statement said.

The birth came as Cruise, 43, is in the midst of a promotional campaign for his upcoming film "Mission: Impossible III," which is due out in May.

The three-time Oscar nominee has two older children that he adopted during his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman, 13-year-old daughter Isabella and 11-year-old son Connor.

News that Holmes, 27, has given birth caps a whirlwind Hollywood romance that ranks as one of the most high-profile celebrity courtships in recent memory, one that morphed into the tabloid sensation known as "TomKat."

The couple began dating last April. But in the minds of the public, the early days of their romance date to Cruise's manic, couch-hopping appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last May, when the actor giddily professed his love for Holmes during an hour-long interview.

Footage of the twice-divorced Cruise, jumping on Winfrey's guest sofa, dropping to one knee to pump his fist and ushering Holmes on stage to declare, "I love this woman!" was replayed repeatedly on television. Bootleg copies sold on eBay for $20.

The "Oprah" appearance triggered suspicions of a publicity stunt to promote his then new film, "War of the Worlds," and hers, "Batman Begins." It also made Cruise the butt of jokes by TV comedians, tabloid columnists and Internet spoof artists.

One Web site began hawking "Free Katie" T-shirts, stickers and coffee mugs, a veiled reference to widely circulating jokes that Holmes was being unwittingly indoctrinated by Cruise into the Church of Scientology, of which he is a prominent member.

Weeks later, in mid-June, the two announced their engagement at a Paris news conference the morning after Cruise popped the question to Holmes at the Eiffel Tower. But they have not set a wedding date.

Mum's the Word for Tom's Katie

From E!: Katie Holmes can break out the noisemakers: She and Tom Cruise are parents.

Cruise and Holmes "joyously welcomed" a baby girl, named Suri, on Tuesday, a statement from the couple's publicist said. Mother and daughter are said to be "doing well." Father is presumably couch-hopping happy.

Suri, the statement explained, means "princess" in Hebrew and "red rose" in Persian. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

Cruise, 43, and Holmes, 27, are engaged to be married. Cruise has said the couple would tie the knot sometime after the birth of their child.

With the arrival of their first joint production, Cruise and Holmes cede the stork-watch spotlight to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, costars in Hollywood's other A-list pregnancy. The Jolie-Pitt baby is expected to drop in May.

Cruise foe Brooke Shields, meanwhile, gave birth to her second child, also a girl, and nearly the same size and weight as Cruise's, Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. It was not known which child, Shields' or Cruise's, was born first; Shields, however, beat Cruise to the punch in announcing her birth.

Coverage of the Holmes-Cruise baby centered in recent weeks on the Scientology custom of the so-called silent birth. (Both Cruise and Holmes are Scientologists.) Reports said Holmes had been fitted with a pacifier to help her hold her tongue, as it were, during labor.

If such coverage seemed to pry, then Cruise himself kicked the door open in an interview last week with ABC's Primetime. He denied Holmes had a pacifier, and maintained that Holmes or any other woman in birth "makes as much noise [as they want]."

In the last year, Cruise, giving voice to one of Scientology's talking points, frequently denounced prescription drugs used to treat conditions such as postpartum depression. But to Primetime's Diane Sawyer, he said that the in-labor Holmes would be administered pain-numbing anesthesia upon request. ("If she needs an epidural, she's gonna get her epidural.")

Cruise, the superstar actor, and Holmes, the former Dawson's Creek ingenue, became an item almost exactly one year ago. They went from red-carpet appearances to Eiffel Tower proposal in just two months. Last October, they announced Holmes' pregnancy. Virtually every step of the way, cameras were there to document the couple kissing, cuddling and, in the case of Cruise, jumping on Oprah Winfrey's couch.

Cruise has two older children, a son and a daughter, both of whom he adopted with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Holmes is a first-time mother.

Katie Gives Birth -- Finally!

From Star: Mission: Impossible 3 star Tom Cruise, 43, and his bride-to-be, Batman Begins star Katie Holmes, 27, are now the proud parents of a baby girl, a source tells Star. Katie gave birth to a girl at 3 a.m. on Tuesday April 18, 2006, the source tells Star.

The birth of their child comes after a year-long whirlwind romance: The couple began dating in mid-April 2005 (and confirmed it on April 29, 2005, in Italy outside the Auditorium Conciliazione di Roma, where Tom was receiving a lifetime achievement award). Then, in June 2005, Tom proposed to Katie atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and, she of course, accepted.

This is Katie's first child, but Tom has two adopted offspring, Connor, 11, and Isabella, 13, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

How Ironic! Shields Beats Cruise to the Parent Punch

From TMZ: Brooke Shields has beaten Tom Cruise to birth. Brooke had a girl, Grier Hammond, just hours before Tom Cruise's fiancee, Katie Holmes, spawned her own baby girl, Suri.

Both sets of mothers and daughters are said to be doing well.

Last year Brooke and Tom, who appeared together in the 1981 film 'Endless Love,' traded barbs in the media over Shields' use of psychiatric drugs while suffering from post-partum depression. Cruise, a staunch critic of psychiatry, believes the ailment can be treated through exercise and vitamins.

Shields' daughter weighed in at 7 pounds even, measuring 20 inches. Holmes' little bundle of joy weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and also measured 20 inches long. Grier Hammond is the second child for Shields and hubby Chris Henchy. The couple's other daughter, Rowan, turns 3 next month.

Suri is the first child for Tom and Katie. Tom has two children: Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11.

UPDATE: 11:05PM ET -- TMZ cameras were outside Tom and Katie's home in Beverly Hills. We caught paparazzi milling around the grounds and cars going in and out. Word is the black Excursion in the video going into Tom's home is his. We spotted that same Excursion leaving the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre shortly before that.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Welcome New Baby

From AP: Word of the world's most famous silent birth has finally been heard. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the public lovebirds dubbed TomKat by the media, "joyously welcomed the arrival" of a baby girl Tuesday, said Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson.

The girl, named Suri, came into the world at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 20 inches long. Her name has its origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or in Persian, meaning "red rose," Robinson said in a statement.

"Both mother and daughter are doing well," the publicist said.

Details about the birth weren't disclosed, but it had been planned to take place as a silent procedure under the tenants of the Church of Scientology, to which both Cruise and Holmes belong.

Scientologists believe words spoken during times of pain are recorded by the "reactive mind" and can cause potential problems for both mother and child.

Suri's birth, which happened in Los Angeles although the exact location was not disclosed, generated a huge noise among the world of Cruise-Holmes watchers.

"Yay, yay, yay," said actress and fellow Scientologist Kirstie Alley. "Bring her over so I can meet her."

"Tonight Show" host Jay Leno announced the birth to his studio audience.

"I just got a phone call that Tom Cruise had a baby girl about two minutes ago. No joke," he said.

Suri is the 27-year-old actress' first child. Cruise, 43, has an adopted daughter and son — Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11 — with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

In a strange twist of fate, Suri was born on the same day actress Brooke Shields gave birth to her daughter, Grier Hammond Henchy. Shields and Cruise had a public spat last year after he criticized the actress for taking antidepressants following the birth of her first child.

Cruise, echoing the position of Scientology, said depression can be treated with exercise and vitamins rather than drugs. Shields dismissed the actor's remarks as a "ridiculous rant."

At the Beverly Hills home of Cruise and Holmes on Tuesday, about a dozen reporters and photographers stood outside the gates and a steady stream of tourists and curious passers-by stopped to take a look. Some visitors left baby gifts outside the gate, which was shrouded in black to keep anyone from peering inside.

A police motorcycle officer stopped in the late afternoon to watch the goings-on. The patrolman, who identified himself as Officer Chase, said he was making a routine check because there had been heightened activity around the area.

He asked if Holmes had given birth yet and, told she had, he drove off.

Meanwhile, a publicity blitz for the new Cruise movie "Mission: Impossible III," which was to begin Wednesday, has been put on hold. The actor has canceled all press appearances, according to Paramount Studios.

It was just about a year ago that Cruise's romance with Holmes became a worldwide sensation.

The actor hopped up and down on a couch during an interview with Oprah Winfrey as he professed his love.

"I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," Cruise declared at the time. "Something happened and I want to celebrate it."

The antics were widely mocked but Cruise was unfazed and continued to display his affection for the star of TV's "Dawson's Creek."

The couple were first photographed together in Rome in April 2005. Two months later, Cruise announced he had proposed to Holmes atop the Eiffel Tower.

"Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he said.

No wedding date has been disclosed.

Holmes was previously engaged to actor Chris Klein. Cruise, previously married to Mimi Rogers and Kidman, also had a high-profile romance with Penelope Cruz.

The birth further whetted the appetite for Hollywood's next high-profile pregnancy: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, rumored to be in the southwest African country of Namibia, are expecting the birth of their first child.

Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise's Baby: A 'Blue-Eyed Beauty'

Tuesday Apr 18, 2006 6:30pm ET
Wednesday Apr 19, 2006 12:05pm ET (updated)

From PEOPLE: Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise "joyously welcomed the arrival of a baby girl, Suri, today," Cruise's rep said in a statement after PEOPLE first broke the news Tuesday afternoon.

"The child weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20 inches in length. Both mother and daughter are doing well."

Suri was born in an L.A.-area hospital – just down the hall from where Brooke Shields gave birth to her daughter Grier on the same day.

The birth went so smoothly that Holmes left the hospital within 24 hours. Holmes, Cruise and baby Suri are back home now and doing well.

Suri "has lots and lots of dark hair and big, blue eyes," says a source close to Holmes's family. "She's going to be a beautiful baby."

Adds Cruise's friend Kirstie Alley: "Tom does everything 150 percent, and fatherhood he does 300 percent. They're going to have a great kid."

The name Suri has its origins in Hebrew meaning "princess," or in Persian meaning "red rose."

Last October, barely six months into their romance, an ecstatic Cruise and Holmes revealed that they were expectant parents.

Immediately ahead for the new dad: the May 5 release of Mission: Impossible 3. Holmes stars in the recently released satirical film about Washington politics, Thank You for Smoking.

It's a girl for Tom and Katie

Posted 4/18/2006 7:21pm ET
Updated 4/19/2006 3:52pm ET

From USA Today: TomKitten has arrived! And it's a girl named Suri.

Tom Cruise, 43, and his fiancée, Katie Holmes, 27, delivered their first child together in Los Angeles Tuesday.

TOMKAT TIMELINE: Review their year-long romance

"Both mother and daughter are doing well," the couple's publicist, Arnold Robinson, said in a statement issued shortly after People magazine reported the birth.

Suri weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and is 20 inches long, and her name means "princess" in Hebrew and "red rose" in Persian, said the statement given to USA TODAY.

Cruise, who jumped on Oprah Winfrey's couch last spring to declare his love for Holmes, was equally enthused about this round of fatherhood. (Cruise has two children — Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11 — with his second wife, Nicole Kidman.)

He and Holmes were "very excited about it, about this new life," Cruise told ABC's Diane Sawyer in a Primetime Live interview that aired Friday.

There's no word on whether Holmes followed the silent birth guidelines of the Church of Scientology, which both she and Cruise espouse. Cruise clarified to Sawyer that "silent birth" was "basically just respecting the mother ... helping to be quiet. ... If she's going to make noise, she's going to make noise. But why have other people make noise? You know, you want that area very calm and to make it very special."

Cruise and Holmes took their romance public last April in Rome, where Cruise attended the David di Donatello awards. They revealed their great expectation in October, after getting engaged June 17 in Paris.

Cruise has said the couple plan to marry this summer. "I can't wait till we get married," he said on Primetime. "I can't wait till I can ... call and say, 'Hey, you know, put my wife on the phone.' "

As usual, Cruise's timing is impeccable. His film Mission: Impossible III opens May 5.

The Latest on Baby Suri

From Inside Edition: Tom Cruise's mother smiled to well-wishers camped outside her son's mansion in Beverly Hills, but she's not the only new grandparent ecstatic over baby Suri's arrival. INSIDE EDITION has confirmed that Katie Holmes' mother and father cut their Florida vacation short and flew into Los Angeles to see the baby.

With all the extra activity, the Beverly Hills cops have stepped up patrols on the once quiet street. Although anxious fans hover with their cell phone cameras hoping for a glimpse of TomKat and TomKitten, no one has seen Tom, Katie or Suri. They've been virtually invisible since Katie gave birth. It seems Tom has gone all out to protect their privacy.

In what appeared to be a scene ripped right out of a "Mission Impossible" movie, Tom used several decoy cars to fool the photographers when the new family left St. John's hospital in Santa Monica. Bodyguards even used an umbrella to block the helicopters hovering above from getting aerial shots.

Meanwhile, celebrities are wishing the new parents well. INSIDE EDITION caught up with Chad Lowe at the Hollywood premiere of the new film "Water." Chad said, "My wish for them is that they can find a place with no cameras, no microphones and they can just concentrate on being parents because I'm sure they'll both be great at it."

The next step for TomKat and TomKitten is the baby naming ceremony officiated by a Scientology minister. It's much like a christening in the Christian faith. According to former Scientologist Tory Christman who told INSIDE EDITION, "The key thing is they're welcoming the child onto planet Earth and into Scientology and into their family and giving them good wishes that they have a good life."

Now the question is - how fast will Katie lose the baby weight? Well, if Katie's recent shopping spree, where People magazine reports the new mom bought hot pants and high heel shoes, is any indication she plans to lose the weight fast! INSIDE EDITION has confirmed Katie has hired a personal trainer from buffbrides.com. Some of their routines include using a giant exercise ball to tone the tummy.

Cruise baby name has many meanings, expert says

From Reuters: It's a Nubian tribe, the word for "rose" in Persian, the "sun" in Sanskrit and, oh yes, it's also an obscure variation on the Hebrew name Sarah and refers to form of an Alpaca's wool.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes may have gotten more than they bargained for naming their daughter Suri when she was born on Tuesday, according to language expert Paul JJ Payack, head of the Global Language Monitor, a group that studies word use.

Payack said he found at least five meanings for Suri, including the name of a Nubian tribe on the Sudanese-Ethopian border. The tribe is known for the ceremonial clay plate inserted into the lower lip of Suri girls after their lower teeth have been extracted.

Suri also refers to the sun in Sanskrit, an ancient Indo-European language in which the word's meaning sometimes is translated as "lord" or "ruler."

Moreover, Suri is the name for the wool of the Andean Alpaca.

In Persian, it means rose, though not necessarily a red rose, as Cruise and Holmes said through their spokesman when the birth was announced.

Payack said Suri was also a relatively rare variation of the biblical name Sarah, which means "lady" or "princess."

Combined with the child's last name, which in English means to move or go along, especially in an unhurried or unconcerned fashion, Payack added that Suri Cruise could translate to: "The ruling Nubian sun princess unhurriedly moving along wearing a rose-colored blanket."

Tom Talks About Baby's Birth

From AP: Tom Cruise hasn't toned down his enthusiasm at all now that fiancee Katie Holmes has given birth to their daughter.

The birth "was everything that we wanted it to be," the actor, who once hopped up and down on a couch to profess his love for Holmes, said in an interview on ABC's "20/20."

"It was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable," he said in the interview broadcast Friday. "What words can you use? It's still something that I'm processing and keep reliving."

Holmes gave birth Tuesday to a girl the couple named Suri, said Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson.

Details about the birth weren't disclosed, but it had been planned as a silent procedure under the tenets of the Church of Scientology, to which both Cruise and Holmes belong.

Cruise was joined on "20/20" by fellow cast members from his latest project, "Mission: Impossible III," who said they had a reunion after Suri's birth.

"We were hugging each other like we always do," Laurence Fishburne told "20/20."

Entertainment Tonight: "With Kate, my whole family, Suri. Every way, it's been extraordinary. Suri is beautiful, Mama is beautiful. It's incredible. It's sublime."

USA TODAY: "I talked it (doing interviews for Mission: Impossible III, opening May 5) over with Katie, and she said, 'Go, go, everything's great.' But I don't want to do anything that keeps me away from home for too long. I just want to be near my family."

Access Hollywood: Suri "has this huge mop of beautiful hair and we have the same haircut. ... She's beautiful."

On silent birth:
