Katie Holmes: Acting Career
An audition tape was sent to the casting director for the 1997 film The Silver Storm , directed by Ang Lee, and Holmes made her big-screen debut while playing the role of Libbets Casey within the film, opposite Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver.
In January 1997, Holmes visited Los Angeles for a pilot season shoot, when producers cast and shoot new programs with the aim of securing a spot on a network schedule. The Toledo Blade reported she was offered the lead in Buffy the Vampire Slayer but she turned it down since she still hadn’t finished high school. Columbia TriStar Television, producer of a replacement show named Dawson’s Creek that was created by screenwriter Kevin Williamson, asked her to return to Los Angeles to audition. However, Katie Holmes had a scheduling conflict with the audition “I was doing my school play, Damn Yankees. And I was playing Lola. I even got to wear the feather boa. I thought, ‘There is not any way I’m not playing Lola to travel audition for a few networks. I couldn’t let my school down. We had already sold a lot of tickets. So I told Kevin and therefore the WB, ‘I’m sorry. I just can’t meet with you this week. I’ve got other commitments.'”
The producers permitted her to send her audition on videotape. Holmes read for the a part of Joey Potter, the tomboy ally of the title character Dawson, on a videotape shot in her basement, her mother reading Dawson’s lines.
As per the Hollywood Reporter, Katie Holmes’ audition “has become the things of legend” and “no one even thought that it had been weird that one of the feminine leads would audition via Federal Express.” Katie Holmes eventually landed the part. As per Paul Stupin, the show’s executive producer, his initial reaction to Katie Holmes’ audition tape was: “That’s Joey Potter!” Kevin Williamson, the show’s creator and executive producer said Holmes features a “unique combination of talent, beauty and skill that has all the makings of a Hollywood star. But that’s just the beginning. To meet her is to instantly fall into her spell.” Williamson thought she had precisely the right search for Joey Potter. “She had those eyes, those eyes just stained with loneliness.” Even though Dawson’s Creek didn’t really get widespread critical acclaim, Katie Holmes became very popular in the country. Katie Holmes started appearing on the covers of magazines like Seventeen, TV Guide, and Rolling Stone. According to Rolling Stone editor Janice Dunn, Katie Holmes was chosen for the cover because “every time you mention Dawson’s Creek you tend to urge tons of dolphin-like shrieks from teenage girls. The fact that she is drop-dead gorgeous didn’t hurt either.”
In the year 2000, Katie Holmes appeared in two movies, Wonder Boys and The Gift. In The Gift Katie Holmes did her first ever nude scene on camera, just before her character was about to be murdered. The movie featured a tobacco lobbyist played by Aaron Eckhart, whom Holmes’s character, a Washington reporter, seduces. Variety wrote that one of the film’s “sole relatively weak notes [came] from Holmes, who lacks even a touch of the wiliness of a ruthless reporter”.
