Katie Holmes Was Tabloid Target on "Extra Man" Set: Actor Paul Dano

Katie Holmes, a target for the tabloids, was often swarmed by a phalanx of photo-snapping paparazzi on the set of her latest film "The Extra Man," co-star Paul Dano revealed to Niteside last night.

"I mean, we all want to be successful actors," Dano said last night during "The Extra Man" premiere after party at the newly opened Union Square location of Vapiano Restaurants, "but I would never want that."

"I don't understand how what they (paparazzi) do is legal. We're trying to film a movie but you can hear their shutters going off a mile-a-minute to get a shot of Katie."

Some of Manhattan’s brightest glitterati made their way to féte the premiere of New York-based film, which opens July 30, and features the talents of Kevin Kline, Katie Holmes, John C. Reilly and Paul Dano

Katie Holmes flew into Gotham by helicopter yesterday morning to join her fellow cast mates for the screening at the Village East Cinema. Due to her current filming of The History Channel mini-series “The Kennedy’s” she wasn’t able to attend the after party at Vapiano, but Niteside got some quality time in with Brooklyn boy Paul Dano to talk about filming in his hometown.

“It was amazing to be able to wake up in my own bed,” the young star said, cheerfully.

Another benefit of the location was that "The Extra Man" author Jonathan Ames is one of Dano’s neighbors and the pair would often hang out during filming.

“He actually lives about a block away from me, so we were hanging out a lot during the filming.”

During his seemingly short time in Hollywood, Paul has already shared the screen with a long list of bold-faced names like Tom Cruise, Daniel Day Lewis, Brian Cox and Steve Carell. Not to mention his co-stars from “The Extra Man” Kevin Kline and Katie Holmes.

The young actor admitted he has gone to great lengths to score the big role, but dressing in drag for “The Extra Man” is definitely a first.

“I didn’t really pay attention to it in the script and then one day wardrobe came up to me with a bunch of women’s clothes. That’s when I remembered, but I was surprised to see that even after I put on the dress I still felt like a dude.”

But make-up might be where Dano draws the line, “The lipstick just felt weird. I couldn’t get it off fast enough.”

After our chat Paul joined his girlfriend, actor Zoe Kazan, to celebrate a successful premiere along with Kline, Alex Burns, Shari Springer Berman, Robert Pulcini and author Jonathan Ames.

Also seen perusing Vapiano’s pasta bar was Carol Alt, Morena Baccarin, Stacey Bendet, Kiera Chaplin, Peter Cincotti, Drew Nieporent, Cynthia Rowley, Kim Stolz, Daniella Van Graas, Harley Viera Newton, not to mention a slew of models including Victoria’s Secret model Doutzen Kroes and Lena Gercke of “Germany’s Next Top Model.”
