A smiling Katie Holmes uttered her first public words Wednesday after declaring her independence from estranged hubby Tom Cruise.

"I'm all right," the 33-year-old actress told the Daily News as she pushed a shopping cart carrying the couple's adorable daughter Suri.

"Thank you," she said graciously.

Holmes flashed a grin as she strolled the aisles of a Whole Foods grocery store in Chelsea and picked up the ingredients for a Fourth of July feast: ground beef, hamburger rolls, strawberries and bananas.

Holmes also grabbed a new sun hat, which a laughing Suri plopped on her head to mug for her appreciative mom.

The twosome was accompanied by a security guard on their Wednesday morning shopping spree.

As they left the store, 6-year-old Suri gave her doting mother a big holiday hug.

"She's not going to hide," a source close to Holmes told The News . "She's going to live her life."

The source, echoing Holmes, said the former "Dawson's Creek" star was "doing as well as can be expected. Her attitude is really unbelievable.

The brief outing came a day after Cruise reportedly spent his 50th birthday flying alone to California because Holmes rejected his pleas for a reconciliation meeting in Iceland.

Holmes' filed for divorce last week in a unilateral move that left Cruise "deeply saddened," his rep said in a statement.

A photo showed the couple holding hands in Iceland last month, and Cruise believed the relationship was salvageable even after the filing, according to Us Weekly .

"She was talking to Tom on the phone up until last week saying, 'I love you,'" a source told People.com.

Behind the scenes, she was plotting the bombshell breakup.

"Her inner circle has been planning this and switching out cell phones since she was in China [in mid-June]," the source said. "When new cell phones arrived, then nobody could reach her. Her old best friends from last week don't have her new number, no email. She's unreachable."

The People source said Cruise knew she decided to rent the new Chelsea apartment where she's been hunkered down in recent days, but he had no idea it was part of an elaborate escape plan.

"[Tom] knew that she moved there, but [he thought it was] for different reasons," the source told People

"She said she moved there to drive into the underground garage. There are fewer paparazzi and it's less intrusive for her," the source said. "It was the first phase of getting everything out of the house, and that's why she was able to say she's moving without giving an indication that she was going to divorce him."

The stunning star's protective dad Martin Holmes, a divorce lawyer from Ohio, flew into town last week to help his daughter clean house.

Together they fired many of Holmes' longtime handlers and filed the paperwork anonymously, making the bold request for sole legal custody of Suri.

Holmes is Cruise's third actress wife, following Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman.

She had the benefit of seeing how Kidman's custody battle played out - with Cruise ultimately calling the shots for the son and daughter he adopted with Kidman.

Raised Catholic, Holmes is determined to protect her only child, sources said, especially now that Suri is at an age when Cruise's controversial adherence to Scientology might play more of a role.

She wants to "make sure her daughter is protected," a source said. "That's her number one concern right now ... the happiness of her daughter."

In her New York divorce filing, Holmes cited "irreconcilable differences" and claimed the marriage collapsed six months ago.

Reports indicate Cruise may file his own divorce papers in California, where he owns a $30 million mansion.
