Katie Holmes: I don't want Tom Cruise to define me
By Derrick Bryson Taylor
It’s been two years since Katie Holmes’ divorce from Tom Cruise was finalized and the headlines and images of her being distant, aloof and deeply guarded have become a mainstay. Now, she’s ready to let people know she’s not that girl.
“I’m much more shy and also much more sensitive than people realize,’ the 35-year-old “The Kennedys: After Camelot” actress told People. “I cry all the time. I do!”
“I also go to the bathroom. I also breathe. Just not in the bathroom. I don’t breathe then,” she joked. “Actually, in public bathrooms, I try not to breathe.”
A more playful Holmes added that she’s ready to blaze a new trail. “I don’t have any fear now, I don’t have a lot of rules for myself, and I don’t take myself that seriously,” she explained. “I’m not afraid to try new things.”
Holmes recently relocated to Los Angles to give her 8-year-old daughter, Suri, space. No matter where she goes, she’s well aware her past follows her—mainly her six-year marriage to Cruise, 52 (and legal reasons keep her from revealing further details about their split).
“I don’t want that moment in my life to define me, to be who I am,” she said. “I don’t want that to be what I’m known as. I was an actor before, an actor during, and an actor now.”
And although her first marriage may have ended in divorce, she’s not opposed to trying it again “someday.”
“I’m a very loving person,” she said. “Of course I’m open to finding love again.”
