Katie Holmes wants an apology from ABC

By Ian Mohr

Katie Holmes' rep has blasted ABC and accused the network of using the star’s name to pump up a “20/20” segment on Leah Remini’s leaving Scientology — when Holmes never appeared on camera or participated in any interview. And Katie’s team wants an apology.

On “Good Morning America” Friday, ABC correspondent Dan Harris promoted a tell-all “scathing insider account” of actress Remini’s time inside Scientology and how she left the faith. But Harris also told “GMA” host Robin Roberts after showing footage of Remini’s interview — which included criticism of Scientology’s most famous member, Tom Cruise — “And we’re also gonna hear from Katie Holmes, the former wife of Tom Cruise, [and] what she is now saying about Leah.”

But it turns out all “20/20” had from Holmes was a brief and benign 17-word statement.

In the interview, Remini, who’s penned new book “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology,” told Harris that as a Scientologist, “being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself .... You are a person who is against the aims and goals of Scientology, you are evil.”

She recalled a night when she was oddly ordered by church brass to teach Cruise salsa dancing at his home and found the actor “forcibly kissing” his then-girlfriend Holmes. “I said, ‘Hey, get a friggin’ room,’” Remini recalled, and, “I was ‘written up’ for that,” meaning she got in trouble.

Holmes provided ABC with a short statement saying, “I regret having upset Leah in the past and wish her only the best in the future.”

But after ABC said viewers would “hear from” Holmes, her rep told Page Six, “The reporter seemed very overzealous — don’t use [my client] to [get] numbers on your show. Katie is 100 percent not appearing unless they magically superimposed her. They owe her an apology.”

An e-mail blast later Friday from the network said: “Katie Holmes declined to be interviewed by ABC News for their reports on Leah Remini’s new memoir ... but her representatives provided this statement on her behalf.”
