Hollywood stars Katie Holmes and Cuba Gooding JR are the stars of Air New Zealand's next safety video.

Behind-the-scenes footage of the video shows Holmes, who got her big break on US teen TV drama Dawson's Creek, in what looks like white pyjamas as she enthuses about New Zealand.

"Everyone I meet from New Zealand is so lovely, so thoughtful, such good-hearted people," the 38-year-old actress said. "I have friends from New Zealand, so I've just only heard good things."

Co-star Gooding Jr, who recently played the title role in TV series The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, is shown raving about Kiwi singer/songwriter Gin Wigmore, whose music also appears in the video.

The actors are being shot before a green screen in Los Angeles and the resultant footage will be overlayed with scenic shots of New Zealand.

Wigmore said the video, which will be called Fantastical Journey, plays with perspective and "makes people say "what is going on down in New Zealand?"."

Local stars of the video, set to launch on Wednesday, include Gisborne, Wellington, Taranaki, Waikato, Auckland, Canterbury and Otago.

Wigmore revealed that her old childhood haunt, the Coromandel's Cathedral Cove, will also make an appearance.

Air NZ global brand and content marketing head, Jodi Williams, said the airline hopes the video will stimulate interest in multiple New Zealand cities and regions.

"Following the success of our last safety video Summer of Safety which was shot in Northland and has had more than 7.6 million views, we wanted to showcase more of our country's cities and regions in our next safety video instalment to help encourage visitors to those areas and drive economic benefit.

The airline posted sneak peaks of the video on social media in an apparent effort to create intrigue.

One video features Holmes, in the same pair of PJs, doing a ballet-like plie as she raises her arms overhead.

"Something fantastic is on its way..." Air NZ wrote in the caption, adding a string of emojis.

A second behind-the-scenes clip shows Holmes sitting on a ledge beside Gooding Jr who promptly dives off and hits the ground.

Air NZ flight attendant Kobi, who appears in the safety video, said Gooding Jr has already been to New Zealand and Holmes, once married to Tom Cruise, "is very interested in coming soon".

The national carrier has managed to rope in some pretty big names to star in its safety videos over the years.

Los Angeles-based Kiwi supermodel Rachel Hunter stars in Summer of Safety alongside Shortland Street's Jay Daniels, Game of Thrones' Joe Naufahu, stuntwoman Zoe Bell, IndyCar legend Scott Dixon and Olympic bronze medallist Eliza McCartney.

Previous stars include American fitness guru and comedian Richard Simmons, Kiwi funnyman Rhys Darby, Scary Movie star Anna Faris, Golden Girl Betty White, adventurer Bear Gryllss, the All Blacks and, most controversially, a group of Sports Illustrated models.
