Katie Holmes and daughter Suri have a close call as a car they are being driven in is sideswiped in New York City.
Maybe it’s a little bit of karma for those who dare diss Scientology.
Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri Cruise were leaving Chelsea Piers Monday night when their Mercedes got sideswiped by a garbage truck — denting the ride but doing no harm to anyone inside.
Suri had been at a gymnastics class at Chelsea Piers. The scrape-up happened about 9:30 p.m. on W. 33rd St., between Seventh and Eighth Aves., police said. Holmes and Suri were passengers, and their driver was the only other person inside the ’Benz, a police source said.
“It was nothing major other than the fact that it was Katie Holmes,” the source said.

But it was a close call for Holmes while in the care of her new team of handlers. The actress ditched her previous security team in an effort to sever additional ties to Tom Cruise as she filed for divorce from the Hollywood legend. It was an extremely public parting that was reportedly motivated in part by Holmes’ fears that Suri would get sucked into Cruise’s Scientology faith.
Suri may not have to wait too much longer to finally be able to see her father in person for the first time since her parents hit Splitsville — and tell him all about the run-in with the garbage truck.
On Saturday, Cruise, 50, wrapped shooting on his sci-fi flick
“Oblivion,” and the next day was photographed jetting out of Mammoth Lakes,
Calif., according to E! Online.
He had been in Iceland shooting the movie when the divorce filing was first reported, and then flew straight to California for more filming, leaving him no time to see Suri.
He’s expected to do that in short order, his lawyer said.
“Tom will be seeing Suri very soon. I don’t know exactly when that will be, and I couldn’t tell you, but I do know it will be very soon,” lawyer Bert Fields told RadarOnline.
“Tom loves his Suri very, very much, as he does his other two children. Tom is a family man and dedicated to his children. They are the center of his world.”
Holmes, 33, filed for divorce in Manhattan on June 28 in a surprise move that left Cruise, in the words of his mouthpiece, “deeply saddened.”
She won primary physical custody in a speedy settlement reached just 11 days later.
Suri’s reunion with her pops may be imminent, but Cruise and his little girl have already logged some serious face time since the divorce.
The doting dad has been video chatting with Suri following the divorce settlement, an unidentified source told Radar.
“It’s all part of the divorce settlement that Tom be allowed to video chat with Suri. Likewise, when Suri is with Tom, Katie can video chat with her,” said the source, who was described as being close to the situation.
“Tom and Katie were advised that this could be a very useful tool to help Suri with the adjustment of her parents getting divorced. ... Tom just lights up when her face appears on the computer screen,” the source added.
“Tom and Suri also communicate on the telephone and there is no limit on the contact for either parent. If Suri wants to talk to Tom, she will call him.”
Since signing the pact, Holmes has enrolled Suri in Manhattan’s prestigious Convent of the Sacred Heart Catholic School, E! reported.
The upper East Side all-girls school charges $39,000 a year in tuition and counts Lady Gaga and Caroline Kennedy among its former students.
