The Girl Next Door
Katie Holmes is ‘proud’ of her directorial debut

Katie Holmes says her first time in the directing chair was scary but inspirational.
Holmes, who stars in and directed “All We Had,” about a struggling mother and a daughter who move to a small Midwestern town during the financial crisis.
Holmes said, “It was very daunting to direct my first movie but I was really inspired to tell this story and I had a wonderful team behind me. But it was challenging to be an actress and a director at the same time. But I loved working with the actors and creating an environment for them. I feel proud of this movie.”
Starring in a film about a mother and daughter facing hardships leaves Holmes — who has daugther Suri, 10, with Tom Cruise — more grateful for her life and upbringing.
“The moment I … thought I was blessed is when I was a little girl. I had a birthday party at McDonalds. I was only 5 or 6 at the time. I was too young to think to myself. ‘I am blessed’ but I did look around and think, ‘This is the best.’”
Guests at the Cinema Society screening included Kelly Ripa, Alysia Reiner and producer Jane Rosenthal.
